John Kolenz

John Joseph Kolenz, 75, passed away on August 22, 2025 at his home near Madrid. A graveside service will be held at Mt. Hope Cemetery, just south of Madrid, on Friday, August 29, 2025 beginning at 2:00 pm.



John was born October 20, 1949 to John and Pansy (Daugherty) Kolenz.



He attended White Hall Country School through the 8th grade, then attended Madrid High School graduating in 1967.



He started working for Meredith Publishing until he entered the Army, serving in Vietnam. After service he returned working at Meredith, later RR Donnelly, from which he retired in 2002. After that he worked for Conley Security for several years.



He lived in the family home at Zook Spur, a former coal mining town.  He enjoyed gardening and taking care of the birds that came to the yard. He loved sports, anything ISU - GO Cyclones!



He was a member of St Malachy's Catholic Church, Ascension Parish in Madrid. Please direct any memorial contributions to the church at 405 Gerald St, Madrid, IA 50156



He is survived by his sister Ethel Kolenz, Des Moines, Iowa.
